In the early days of Ottawa’s expansion to create suburbs away from the downtown core, people migrated mostly to the west. The area west of Ottawa’s original downtown was considered the suburbs through the 1950’s, when many of the original half-acre lots where divided and sold, allowing for bigger, more expensive homes to be built through the 1960’s and 1970’s. Today, West Ottawa is definitely part of the city’s urban core and is a highly sought after section of Ottawa.
One of the reasons this area is so popular is when the neighbourhoods were first established, they were just like individual little towns, complete with a main street that included amenities such as grocers, butchers, pharmacies and restaurants. The current communities within West Ottawa have retained that small village feel despite becoming decidedly more urban over time.
